Business Trip Survival Tactics
For the last several days, I’ve been traveling around the Midwest for work. Over the weekend I had a conference in a small, rural town in Lamoni, IA – home of Graceland University (shameless plug for Alma mater) – and then it was on to the headquarters for my company/church in Missouri. As I write, I’m sitting in yet another rural town in southern Iowa called Mt. Ayr, preparing to head back home to Michigan.
If you’re anything like me, you like your video games for more than just casual, occasional play; you use them as a distraction. Video games for me are like a bottle of beer or glass of scotch after a long day of work for a lawyer or business person. Games are my release. Traveling limits me on my access to video games (I don’t have a laptop yet, or a handheld game machine like DS or PSP), so I have to be a bit more creative. Here’s what I’ve done this time around:
First off, I’ve upgraded my Zune to the latest firmware which has given me the chance to download some games. Granted, these games aren’t the greatest, but they have provided me with entertainment in the evening as I’m preparing to fall asleep. There are other games out there that you can add to your Zune, but it requires a bit of technical know-how on your part to get them running. Also, with the official games, they work better with the rest of your Zune’s functions.
The other important part is, instead of trying to lug your 360 or PS3 to a hotel and hoping that you can hook it up, look up a friend in the town you are visiting. This can have two benefits – you might get your fix for video games if they have a console and you also might get to save the company a few bucks, which for me is actually saving me a few bucks because of my limit for annual reimbursement.
Since I’m still a relative n00b at business travel (I’ve definitely traveled a lot in the past, but haven’t ever had the freedom this new position affords me), I certainly don’t have all the answers. Let me know what you have done to survive the departure from your precious lifeblood while on the road in the comments!
