Random Thoughts from the Gameless Gamer: Turkey Day!

Welcome everyone to our new and exciting site.  By now I hope that you are beginning to find your way around and can find today’s exciting entry from the Gameless Gamer.  I also hope that you are enjoying our new image.  Any feedback should be sent to grundy, he’s the control freak around here.

Realizing that some visitors do not celebrate the American holiday of Thanksgiving, I thought I would list a few fun facts:

  1. The first Thanksgiving was celebrated in 1621, it now occurs on the fourth Thursday in November.
  2. The first Thanksgiving celebration ran for three days.  Can you imagine three days of pumpkin pie, turkey, and potatoes.  Sounds like Heaven, although that would also pull us away from our games a lot longer.
  3. George Washington issued the first national Thanksgiving Day Proclamation in the year 1789 and again in 1795.  How do you issue the first Proclamation twice?
  4. F.D.R. moved the date of Thanksgiving in order to lengthen the Christmas shopping season.  Christmas shopping starts right after Halloween anymore.  Should we move Thanksgiving to before Halloween to fit for this extension?
  5. The Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade tradition, which is huge event that takes place on Thursday morning before football (which is more important), started in the 1920’s.

Now, I don’t know how everyone else celebrates Thanksgiving, but this is sadly the first year where I will not be celebrating at home.  Luckily I still get to celebrate it with other family.  There should be around 20 of us huddled around the table this year.  How about all of you?  Will you have enough people around to feel you have a lot to give thanks for?

I was talking to a friend of mine recently about Thanksgiving.  He was upset that I was not able to come home because usually we have an eating competition to not only see how much food we can finish, but more importantly, how many slices of pie we can eat.  Pumpkin, Apple, Cherry, Blueberry, and the all important Cheesecake were all on the hit list.  I think our record is around 7 to 10 each, and that is after two or three full plates of stuffing, turkey, green beans, and the like.  To think, we usually follow that all up with bowling at the local alley.  It’s kinda tough to bowl with a dizzying sugar high.  I Just hope I never become diabetic because I wouldn’t be able to do much of that if that was the case.

Of course, one of the best traditions about Thanksgiving is football.  The current trends seems to be watching the Detroit Lions lose year after year.  The chances are even greater this year, when they are 0-11.  Had to bold that just for Grundy, who happens to be a fan…  at least I think he still is.  Ask him and he may not admit it this year.  In the past it has always been enjoyable watching the Packers and Lions play, but unfortunately that doesn’t happen this year.  So we must survive with Detroit vs the Tennessee Titans that up until this past week were undefeated.  So, I have a few predictions for those of you who have Tennessee players on your fantasy football team.  Put them on the field and let them play.  Running back, quarter back, defense especially.  Tampa Bays defense put up 17 fantasy points last week against Detroit.  Do that and let me know how it goes.  Especially so I can harass Grundy as usual.

Have a safe and happy Thanksgiving.  And if you have the time consider going to a local food kitchen and helping serve food to people who do not have much, especially with this tough time in the economy.  Everyone benefits that way.
