First Impressions: Dead Space

A few weeks ago I wrote up my Christmas list. Well, Black Friday hit, which gave me the opportunity to get a couple items from my list. One of those was Dead Space (EA) which was at Target for only $30(!). It’s been pretty crazy over the Thanksgiving weekend for me, but last night I had a chance to sit down and play through a bit of it. I’ve been excited to play it, and here’s just a preview of what it’s like. Next week I’ll have a full-on review for you!

From what I can tell, your character Isaac is just a “Joe the Plumber” type of guy, except by “plumber” I mean space engineer. The crew of the ship that he’s on has been summoned to a space station to do some repairs but – SURPRISE – not everything is as it should be. It sounds like a pretty tired old tale, but I’ll still give the game all its got.

As should be expected, the graphics are top-notch! Even though I’m temporarily limited to standard definition and only using the standard RCA yellow plug, the quality of graphics and level of detail are impeccable. If EA managed to maintain that level of quality, this game will certainly not disappoint visually.

The sound is the proper level of eeriness. This is, after all, a horror game, and the sound has so far maintained a certain heightened tension. I’ll do more on the sound once I have a chance to see what the game will throw at my ears.

Some may complain about the HUD, but I must say that this is a fresh and unique way to display information. I’ll try and get a screenshot for you to look at in next week’s review.

Again, next week I’ll have a full work-up of the game, but let me warn you – I never finished Doom 3 because I could only play it for about 20 minutes before my heart started pounding too fast. If you don’t hear from me next week, I’ve had a heart attack!
