Release of the Week: Afro Samurai

afrosamuraititleSamuel L. Jackson is no stranger to voice acting in video games.  In the tremendously successful “Grand Theft Auto: San Andres,” Sammy played the part of a power abusing police officer that loves to taunt and make your life miserable.  Therefore its no surprise that when Afro Samurai took his character’s adventures onto the video game scene, Jackson’s voice followed suit.  The Afro Samurai video game is full of Jackson style F-bombs, as well as dialogue from the experienced pipes of John Di Maggio (Gears of War’s Marcus Fenix and Futurama’s Bender), Terrance Carson (God of War’s Kratos), and many other notable stars.

Afro Samurai is a button masher that is stuffed full of witty one-liners and extreme violence.  As you progress through the game there are numerous opportunities to unlock a wide variety of more effective and aptly named combos, which can be used to slice up baddies with your katana.  There is nothing like mashing out the “Oh That Hurt” combo, as you sever limbs and/or cut your foes in half.  You can do all of this, while listening to Samuel L. Jackson’s colorful and sometimes humorous self-commentary.

While blood, gore, and humor are important aspects of the game, Afro Samurai is not without substance.  Afro Samurai’s ancient japanese setting is beautiful, while complimented by a soundtrack that infuses traditional japanese music with modern hip hop.  The story should roll like a movie, keeping you interested throughout the game, as you seek to avenge your father’s death.  Unfortunately the average player should finish the game in six to eight hours, so the game may simply live on as a great rental.
