Release of the Week: Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War II

dawn-of-war-2Grand Theft Auto IV: The Lost and the Damned comes out this week exclusively for download on the XBox 360.  Unfortunately, this is about as exciting to me as watching paint dry.  Having spent my Valentines day with my shiny PS3, it looks like I will lose out again due to exclusive content only being offered on lesser systems.  While I bide my time and await the upcoming Killzone 2 so I can rub it in the Micro-fanboy’s faces, I looked into what was coming out for the greatest system of them all: The PC.

This week, Relic Entertainment takes us back to the 41st millennium in the sequel to their 2004 hit Dawn of War.  Once again the player takes command of the Space Marines in galactic battle against the crafty Eldar and the Ork menace.  As is the usual case with a new Dawn of War game, another enemy from the 40k universe is introduced.  This time it is in the form of the bug like Tyranids.  With a new graphics engine, Dawn of War II looks like a fine sequel to one of the best RTS’s not to come out of Blizzard.

tyranidBuilding upon the rich history of the 40k universe, the Dawn of War games have had a lot to offer.  As an added bonus this time around, Relic Entertainment has built in a co-op multiplayer campaign.  Now you and a buddy can battle aliens throughout the entire single player campaign together.  Add a destructable environment and a new graphics engine to simulate all the slicing and dicing of your foes, this game looks to be one major leap for RTS kind.
